Grantee Spotlight: Meet Yeshivat Maharat

SRE Network invests in strengthening the capacity of Jewish organizations through grantmaking so that Jewish communities will be strengthened, become more cohesive, experience healing, and have deeper trust in each other, their institutions, and leaders. Over the past six years, SRE has invested over $6.5M across 108 projects and 52 organizations through its grantmaking, technical assistance, and partnerships.

Throughout the year, we provide grants to outstanding Jewish organizations whose organizations and projects focus on advancing the safety, respect, and equity across North America’s Jewish communal landscape. Over the coming weeks, we will shine the spotlight on SRE's twelve extraordinary spring 2024 field building grant recipients.

We are excited to introduce you to Yeshivat Maharat.

About Yeshivat Maharat

Yeshivat Maharat educates, ordains, and invests in passionate and committed Orthodox women who model a dynamic Judaism to inspire and support individuals and communities.

About the Grant

With a two-year grant, Yeshivat Maharat will develop a network for female Orthodox rabbis and those who are not ordained but serve in rabbinic capacities to elevate and expand the arena for Orthodox Jewish women in rabbinic roles.

Q&A with Yeshivat Maharat

SRE: Why is Yeshivat Maharat excited to receive this grant? What change do you hope this grant will bring to your organization and the important work it does?

YM: Maharat is thrilled to receive the field building grant. Maharat saw a gap in much needed resources for Orthodox women leaders in clergy roles. Rabbinic networks are available to women in other denominations and to male Orthodox rabbis, but the existing networks are not intended to serve Orthodox women leaders. This grant enables Maharat to seek out experts in the field to support the development of the network and ensure its materials and services elevate, empower, and support Orthodox women leaders.

SRE: How has being a member of SRE Network impacted Yeshivat Maharat?

YM: Maharat is grateful to have SRE as a partner in its work. Not only has SRE provided funding to our projects, but we have also consulted with SRE on best practices and incorporated ideas from SRE workshops into our culture and policies.

SRE: What is your hope for the future of the broader Jewish nonprofit landscape?

YM: We hope that inclusion and gender equity become a greater priority for all Jewish nonprofits.
